About the Journal
Pajjoya: Journal of Indian Knowledge Systems in Education is a peer-reviewed, open-access, multilingual research journal devoted to the scholarly study of Indian Knowledge Systems and their engagement with contemporary educational theory, policy and practice.
The Name
The journal takes its name from the Ardhamāgadhī Prakrit word pajjoya (पज्जोय) — illumination, radiance — corresponding to Sanskrit pradyota and recorded as such in the Paia-sadda-mahannavo, the standard Prakrit lexicon. The word occurs in the Namotthuṇaṁ (Śakra-stava), the hymn traditionally ascribed to Indra and among the most widely recited of the Jain liturgical texts, in the epithet loga-pajjoya-garāṇaṁ: to those who make light for the world.
The choice of a Prakrit rather than a Sanskrit title is deliberate. Ardhamāgadhī is the language of the Jain Āgamas and one of the most consequential and least studied vehicles of Indian thought, and this journal holds that it belongs within the study of Indian knowledge systems on equal terms with Sanskrit.
Purpose
The journal was established in response to the National Education Policy 2020, which mandates the integration of India's intellectual traditions into curricula at every level. That mandate has generated considerable activity but comparatively little rigorous scholarship. Pajjoya exists to supply a forum in which this integration can be examined critically — neither uncritically celebrated nor dismissed — through historical scholarship, philosophical analysis, empirical classroom research, and policy evaluation.
The journal is non-sectarian. It publishes work on Vedic, Buddhist, Jain, and all other Indian intellectual traditions on equal terms, and welcomes critical and comparative scholarship, including work sceptical of prevailing IKS discourse.
